In Maratea, tourism has long been established, especially among the Italians. This, and the wonderful climate of course, is one of the reasons we dared to start a B&B in southern Italy. Although the Italians themselves think the season is shorter here, we are sure that we Scandinavians think it is longer. For example, the Italians hike in the middle of summer while we may prefer to hang by the beach and pool.

When we moved here in January 2019, we took a short hike one fine day. It was fourteen degrees and sunny, which is perfect conditions for this mountainous region. Of course, the period December to February offers very varied weather, but this also comes with fantastic clear air and good visibility on fine days. We could see all the way to the volcanic islands of Isole Eolie o Lipari and Stromboli north of Sicily, which is rarely possible in the summer due to sun and humidity.

The periods March to May and October to November fit perfectly for an active holiday with hiking, biking, horseback riding, running etc. There are several hiking, mountain biking and riding trails to choose from, and one of them is adjacent to our B&B. There are organisers who organise group trips, or you just do it on your own.

The summertime is of course suitable for canoeing, hiking in caves (provides pleasant coolness), paragliding and much more.

The oldest house i Maratea is from 1873 and still holds.

The old town of Maratea

10 minutes by car from our B&B lies Maratea with its narrow alleys, quaint squares and cosy restaurants. A stroll in the old city centre is always an experience for all senses. There you are guaranteed to find your favourite café and the best ice cream.

The beaches

Along the breathtaking coasts of the Tyrrhenian Sea and its turquoise waters, many gems await to be discovered. You can choose between kilometre-long beaches or small, scenic bays with a completely different character. To achieve the true Italian beach hangout feel, you can book a sun lounger and parasol on most beaches as well as buy lunch and refreshments. Here you’ll find lovely beaches covered with small and large round stones, absolutely magical stones that are as beautiful to touch as they are beautiful to look at. Spiaggia Nera (the black beach) has small pastel-like stones, while Spiaggia di Porticello in Acquafredda has many round stones shaped like bird eggs.

The water is clear and perfect for snorkelling. There are many caves and openings along the beaches to explore, and this you can do on your own or through organisers who arrange canoe tours. In the near future, we will also be able to offer day trips with our own boat and take you to secluded natural coves that are otherwise difficult to access on foot or by car.

Good to know

  • During high season August-September, it is important to be early on the beach to get a good spot.

  • Bathing shoes are a must as the beaches get hot and if you are going to climb on rocks etc.

  • In addition to a sun hat and sunscreen, cash is a must for parking and renting loungers.

Hiiking

We offer a breathtaking hike starting at our B&B which first takes you up a mountain ridge and then continues down to the sea and the country road. Don't be surprised if you encounter mountain cows and lizards and a dose of vertigo. But, of course, also an adorable view. The hike takes about two hours and ends preferably with a lunch in Marina Di Maratea.

The port

Porto is a cosy little harbour with a handful of really good restaurants. All offer a nice view of the boats and the sea. You can go here just to enjoy a cup of coffee at some outdoor dining or just to watch people. In the summer, a lot of impressive yachts arrive and there will be life and action.

Food and wine.

The regional cuisine of the province of Basilicata is both delicate and rustic, providing a large selection of freshly caught fish from the nearby sea and high-quality tasty vegetables. Taste the delights of the sea, which often come grilled and sip on the spicy domestic liquor Bitter. Of course, you must experience the locally produced braided mozzarella which also comes in a smoked form. Vegetables and fruits are in abundance and are sold in every street corner. This is a region that really eats by season and much of the food is locally produced.

Tourist attractions

The 22-meters high Christ statue "Il Redentore", located 644 meters above sea level, can be seen almost everywhere in Maratea. Only the statue of Christ in Rio de Janeiro is higher. From here you also have a magical and breathtaking view. Of course, this is a place for shooting nice pictures and it’s recommended to bring binoculars. Here’s also a nice lunch restaurant that offers local dishes. If you are interested in beautiful churches, you may also want to visit some of the forty-four (!) ones found in Maratea.
